I had the most glorious time spinning for the students of La Canada High School at their Winter Formal. The party was hosted at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. 400 students danced the night away.Some of the big rocking songs included: LMFAO "party Rock" and Jay Z w/ Kanye "N** in Paris"While they dug Journey's "Don't Stop Believ'in" They could take more than that on the classic rock tip. Dropped Sweet Home Alabama and Bon Jovi. They didn't quite work.Other notable artists included: Duck Sauce, Avicii, Rihanna... Think commercial high energy, and you've got the full picture. Party lasted for about three hours. Which meant, I slammed it the entire time...Congrats to La Canada High. Thanks to the staff at El Rey for being so courteous.

I've had a fantastic year of exciting and unique weddings. The Malchose party was no exception. Lawrence and Monica chose Knollwood Country Club, located in the north San Fernando valley.

I haven't been to Knollwood in almost 10 years. It sits about one mile north of the 118 freeway, on Balboa Boulevard. The staff there is fabulous. Just a wonder to work with. Big thanks for being accommodating…

I arrived early enough to watch the ceremony, and then off to cocktails and the reception. Their first dance choice was KERMIT THE FROG - RAINBOW CONNECTION. Cute. I had played a song so different as a first dance. It was fun, and the crowd appreciated it as well. 60 guests in total. It wasn't a large crowd by typical wedding standards, but they were fantastic… Played a few standards like Brick House and Prince-Kiss, as well as current standards like GIVE ME TONIGHT.

The most special part of the night was when the Bride and Groom came up to sing. Yes! They performed several of their original songs. It was AMAZING.

Thank you Lawrence and Monica. This won't be a party I'll forget anytime soon...

12 and highland, manhattan beach

This party started as a huge challenge and ended up being a great party. So what happened?

Most nightclubs have Serato set up for the djs upon arrival. But not tonight. And I havent set up the box in years. I was unfamiliar with the system and didn't want to touch and mess up what they had. The resident dj showed up 5 minutes before his start and didn't want to touch the system. So I was stuck.

I spoke with the host of the party and explained I could spin with the CDs I had on hand, but it wouldn't be over the top party music he'd be hoping for. And then I remembered I had my vestax vci300 in my bag. Connected the controller to one of the open channels. And started my set on time.

I think this story is telling. Any other dj would show up and not weigh options. Probably mist would be in real trouble. Reid (the host) pushed me, believed in my ability. It worked!

Many of the customers had never heard a DJ spin a set like I mixed. Top 40, pop, rock. And given my set up and situation, I'd say it wasnt even one of my best sets. That says alot.

Wednesday night I spun the three day rule party. Co-hosted by Fred segal and Nicole Myden (NMPR), was a great time.

I set up outside the main doors. Guest gathered by the front door, near Umani burger an inside close to the bar.

Guests shopped, browsed, drank and played around till the end at 10pm.

I'm looking forward to the next party.

So I DJ'd on Friday, July 29, 2011 at the St. Regis Monarch Beach resort. It was a fantastic party with over 600 guests. the three hour party hosted by Dr. Moy was attended by celebrities and local residents. during the event I DJ and spun all sorts of and styles of music including hip hop house funk disco and Old school. it was wonderful seeing so many familiar faces and meeting so many new faces as well. I had the honor to spin, entertainment and help coordinate Jessica and Alex's wedding ceremony and their reception at Lake Sherwood, outside of Los Angeles (near Westlake Village).

The day started off a bit windy, but really turned out to be fantastic. By nightfall there was practically no wind or breeze, it was cool, but not cold.

From Grand Entrance to the final dances, the crowd was in rare form. They dug the new music from JLO and Pitbull, as well as some of the more underground high energy house tracks from Wolfgang Gartner. Dont get me wrong, I still played classics like WALK THIS WAY, and JUMP AROUND.

With deep appreciation to both Montage Hotel, Beverly Hills and Aqua lounge. We completed a very successful weekend of Bat Mitzvah parties.

Emcee Danny, along with two dancers, and the assistance of DJ Ben, we hosted and entertained two days of Bat Mitzvah parties in Beverly Hills.

What makes a successful bar or bat mitzvah? FLow, energy and focus. Sounds cliche, but its true. MC Danny did a spectacular job keeping the flow and energy of the parties on a consistent level on both days. The dancers, worked with the crowd on some of the more current dance moves, showing off the DOUGIE and The JERK as well as the CATDADDY.

Castle Green, Pasadena Wedding (May 15 2011)

I had the wonderful honor of entertaining the guests at Castle Green in Pasadena, May 15, 2011.
If you haven't been to Castle Green, its a historic building in the heart of Pasadena, near Arroyo Parkway and Colorado Blvd.

The wedding was held inside the living room area. Immediately after was the cocktail reception, also held within the same area.

With the assistance of Desiree Russo www.DesireeRussoWeddings.com, guests were ushered into the Grand Hall, music was already going, and the GRAND entrance began. Wonderful energy from the guests. They walked into Stevie Wonders - For Once in my life. RIght into the first dance Chris Cross - Arthur's Theme (the Best that you can do) and open dance followed.

Dinner and several toasts happened, more dancing, bouquet toss and a wonderful end to the evening. Guests were invited to continue the party across the street at the local bar.

What makes a great DJ?

In a nutshell, a great DJ is one with experience. Yes, it can be argued that even DJ's that have 20 years of work, may not be so good. Its true. It depends on the client needs of course. Does the client want a cheesy emcee, a club DJ, a wedding DJ, a corporate DJ?

The best of the best is one who can cover practically every gamut of music, sound, and video. Now, some disc jockeys can do most types of events, but not necessarily all. How many Deejays do you know who can spin, Indian, arabic, Greek, French, and other forms of world music? There aren't too many. But, those Deejays are very specific, rare, and are unable to shift beyond their own comfort zones.

I'd argue that deejays like (examples) Tiesto, Z trip, Q-Bert probably can't spin a good wedding, or corporate event. Why? They (like their ethnic music counterparts) are very focused on genre and style. Tiesto is an electronica dj. You probably wont hear him spin funk, disco, hip hop. Z trip spins old school and new school. Q Bert is a turntablist. His style is to mix short sets of scratched tracks. Does anyone want to hear scratching at a wedding or a corporate party? Sorry Tiesto, Z and QBert for using your names. But, its to make a point.

When it comes to a great party. Make sure to choose the RIGHT DJ, with the right music, and sound.

How often do you get to go into a store and watch the DJ mix music and video together? never!
But, it might just start happening a bit more now.

Hollywood DJ Crash hits 2011 running

Its been a while since my last posting. Jumping into 2011, I spun the Playboy Mansion New Years eve party, spun events at Sagebrush Cantina, at the London Hotel, Brookside Golf Course, Viceroy Santa Monica, and later today for Kim Kardashian.

2011 is looking great. I've partnered with QSC and will be acquiring a brand new sound system for event. It will include a half-dozen speakers and several bass subwoofer cabinets. Now I can provide sound for up-to and beyond 1000 guests. The system will blow your mind.

Along with a partnership with Chauvet, I've acquired a dozen LED lighting effects. They're great as both uplights and dancefloor lights. They're small, efficient and cost effective. Perfect for any event!

Last night my friend (Jay Davis) hosted a fabulous comedy show with Special guest, Daniel Tosh. Dave Chappelle and Dane Cook came by to hang out with glamourous hollywood locals watching comedians do their thang.

I just finished an incredible month of weddings and private events. Every weekend in August was filled with weddings and specials events.

Starting with August 7th, I spun at the Playboy Mansion for the Midsummers Nights Dream Party. The LEAP foundation party on the Next Friday, Travis and Salina's wedding the next day. Then on August 21st, I dj'd Andrew and Sophia's wedding reception, Dave Mathhews and John Mayer's afterparties. On Saturday August 27 and 28th, I deejayed the Chambord Vodka party at the London Hotel rooftop, and Kendra and Daniel's reception in Fullerton. That doesn't include all the other in-store events during the weekdays.

Los Angeles Wedding DJ Crash spins Jonathan and Mary's reception

What made Mary and Jonathan's reception great? Great attitude. They came to me and asked to create a party, not a typical wedding reception. That's what they got - fun and carefree.

The reception was atop the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, in the conservatory room. Thanks to Shaun and Sara for setting the room. They created a fantastic atmosphere. Not the typical table rounds, instead using tall tops to give the room a more casual and informal feel, while still keeping it elegant and sophisticated.

There was no formal structure to the party. Yes, I said it - NO AGENDA. We knew the food would come out from 7-9pm, and guests would be arriving at the same time. What bride and groom didnt want was a cake cutting, no garter and bouquet toss, no grand entrance - nothing. So my job was to create several atmospheres. The first half of the night was upbeat lounge (soul, r&b), and the second half of the night was dance, top 40, pop, rock, and hip hop.

Congratulations Mary and Jonathan. Great food, friends and family.

On Saturday May 29th, I had a real treat - the honor to DJ for the King, Queen and princess of Swaziland. They celebrated their daughters graduation from Biola university. I must say, she is a good rapper! Sikhanyiso rapped a couple of bars at the stage in the presence of dignitaries and celebrities. Wonderful.

I've attached a quick 6 minute edit of video from the party (no audio - expect for a few south african songs).

This was a once in a lifetime kind of event. How many people can say they've spun for a king and queen?

Redlin-Kernen Wedding at Dukes Malibu

We couldn't have asked for a nicer day. The sun shining, cool breeze - but not cold. If you've never been to Dukes in Malibu its truly a great experience. The staff was terrific! They are down-to-earth friendly, helpful. The location is found on PCH. While its not a five star upscale type venue, I walked past several local hollywood movie stars, one of them included Ryan O'Neil. Make sure to check out the Sunday brunch. Enough about Duke per se'. Now to the reception.

Jenny and Mark are fantastic! The reception started as a bus carrying all the friends arrived and the party started. Tray passed hor dourves, a nice bar, sun and surf, a nice patio deck and off to a great start. The music flavor for the beginning was cool alternative like jack Johnson, and jazzy funk like Herbie Hancock. Upbeat, but not overpowering.

As guests made their way to their seats, the next event were a few toasts, and a video montage. Dad had to reboot the computer. The video shows the bride and groom exchanging vows in Fiji. There is a great clip which the bride and groom are giving vows and the groom is wiping the sweat from his brow - it looked like he was nervous sweat about the marriage (but it was really that tropical heat). The crowd roared with laughter. Very cute!!!

Dinner buffet served, family members walked up to the mic one by one to congratulate the couple - cheers. On to the first dance. They selected John Legend "So High." From slow songs to faster including Brick house, I gotta feeling, like a virgin to Don't Stop Believing.

They decided not to have some of the traditional things like garter bouquet, but did cut the cake.

A great experience. In fact, the party lasted two more hours than expected! It was fun.

Most brides were looking for 2011 weddings. May and June 2011 were the busiest months.

Its been several years since I've been back to the Target Terrace at the Grammy Museum. Two years ago I spun at the E3 Conference party at this location. I've returned.

This was a corporate event, for the same group that actually built LA Live. AEG and Wolfgang Puck catering help to host the party. 300 guests chilled (literally - it was a bit cold), drank and ate all night long.

Many thanks to Diana (the host), Nadia (AEG) and the fantastic staff from Wolfgang Puck for making the night so fantastic. Great view. Cool crowd.

The music style was nu-jazz and classic rock. The crowd was mainly gentlemen (aged 30-50).

W&D Wedding at Sunset Restaurant in Malibu

Who knew, at 5pm the sun would finally pop out from behind the fog. It did. All day a thick layer of fog fell heavy upon the land, then, quickly and suddenly the fog lifted and the sun beemed brightly til it set around 6:30 or 7pm. It was a fantastic wedding.

The reception was brilliant. From the moment guests walked into the room, there was a happy festive atmosphere. The grand entrance was quick, concise, elegant and lively. We swept right into the first dance, and directly into dancing right after that. The crowd got up to groove without hesitation. The party continued right into salads.

Dinner music consisted of requested jazz: Sade, Michael Buble, Sergio Mendez, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Herbie Hancock (to name a few). A few heart-felt speeches gave way back to dancing, which led into cutting of cake, and back to dancing.

MPISCC conference and Tradeshow - afterparty mixer

On Friday, March 12 2010, I had the distinct honor to serve as musical host to the MPISCC conference and tradeshow at the JW marriott, downtown Los Angeles. The Marriott played host to over 100 of the best, biggest and brightest meeting professionals in Southern California.

The soiree began at 5pm sharp and ended around 7pm in the evening. It was a very cool and breezy night. The backdrop of the Ritz Carlton, and search-lights floated through the early evening skies. As the sun fell, the white lit furniture turned into pieces of art.

Congratulations to Melanie Abbott. She won an 8 night stay in Hawaii. If you can believe it, someone else was picked before her, and they weren't on-site to claim the prize. Who wouldn't want 8 nights in hawaii???

JW Marriott at LA Live Opening Night celebration w/ DJ Crash

This was a special opening ceremony for the special event community. There were several hundred guests in attendance. I especially enjoyed watching the aerialist pouring sparkling wine for guests. The overall layout, lighting, food presentation was fantastic.

The team at the JW Marriott Downtown Los Angeles really has their game together.

The music style was Nu-Jazz, Acid Jazz, Nu-Disco all blended together. I think the music did well to compliment the lighting and atmosphere of the room.

The crowd was terrific, cute.

I had tons of fun spinning for about 1000 guests.

I must say - 2009 was a great year for me. I reduced my fees slightly, worked more events than ever, donated my time to charity events, and met fantastic new people. It was also stressful as well. Broke up with my g/f, and had some struggles with client pre-conceived ideas of a professional DJ. I think 2010 will be even better.

Seems that the economy is turning around slightly, slowly and cautiously. That's okay. We all deserve something better.

About one week ago I DJ'd at the Playboy Mansion for New Years Eve. It was a terrific party. Not as many guests as previous years - it was intimate - but nice.

I head off to Palm Springs next week, and have several wonderful events booked into the near future, including several weddings.

What I really want is to donate more of my time to charity events. But, it seems like charities have been hit hard by the economic downturn. Please call - I want to help.

Keep moving forward. Keep your head up. Think positive.

Who is a professional DJ?

Its a full-time job. They don't have any other work other than being fully immersed in music and the professional entertainment world. It is not a normal monday thru friday (9 to 5).

DJ-ing isn't just a weekend job either. Its marketing, promotions, investment in music and equipment, networking and everything else that goes into making a successful business.

Professional DJ: Is someone who arrives on time, or early. Dresses appropriate to the occasion.

Professional DJ: treats clients with dignity and respect, and also expects the same in return.

Professional DJ: Knows how to spin ALL forms of music. Not just house, or hip hop - but also funk, disco, country, latin. A professional DJ will study a musical form before spinning it at an event. We normally have that additional time between jobs to learn about new genres of music, and sometimes go back and re-educate ourselves on some of the classical forms too.

Professional DJ: Knows when to get on a mic, and when NOT to be on the mic.

Professional DJ: Understands the changes in technology.

Professional DJ: Teaches others about music.

Professional DJ: Has been working full time as a DJ for more than 8 years. With an average of 200 events per year.

If you choose to hire someone without qualifications, ask yourself this:
"Would you hire a friend to be your dentist - if that person wasn't fully qualified?"
Why would you hire an unqualified person to DJ your party?

It was windy, cool and fun.
Luckily by the time the party started the VERY gusty winds had died down considerably - but still there.
About 100 guests arrived. All them professional event producers.

It was great to see so many people in the industry just hanging out. No door fees or charges, free food, free music, free cocktails and photobooth.
